How often do you think about the safety of the car on your drive?
You arrive home from work, pull into your house, lock the car door, and head in. Don’t need to think about the car again until you’re next in it, do you?
Well your car might not be as safe as you think. If your drive is easy to access, you’d be surprised at how simple it is for a car thief to stroll up in the dead of night, break in, and do away with your beloved vehicle.
Not good.
But don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here are a few insider tips that’ll help you make sure your car is safe.
They don’t care about make or model
You might think that your vehicle is safe because it’s an older, uncool model. But that isn’t the case. Car thieves will take anything they can get their hands on. It’s important to note that the motive for stealing often dictates the type of car they’re looking for though. If they’re looking to sell car parts, they’ll take any vehicle. If they’re looking for something to do a ram raid, they’ll want a bigger car.
But don’t think your car is safe because it’s an ‘old banger’.
Don’t turn your car into a shop window
People always leave valuables on the passenger seat or in the footwell where they can clearly be seen by anyone walking past. Untidy vehicles are especially attractive to thieves. If you don’t have time to clean the car, it’s doubtful that you’ve found time to take the expensive radio and GPS system into the house.
Anti-theft devices do work
Thieves avoid cars equipped with security devices at all costs. The time it takes to remove the security measures you’ve put in place isn’t worth it for them because it’s likely there’s another car down the road that’s ripe for picking. Even if it’s a simple sticker that says ‘this car is alarmed’ it’ll make them think twice.
Park smart
When out and about in your car, you’re probably quite careful about where you park. A well lit area is good, and if it’s in a neighbourhood that’s reputable, there isn’t a need to worry.
Do you think about how you’re parking though? A car thief wants to find a car that they can break into and shoot off in. Not one that means they have to perform a tricky reverse manoeuvre to get away.
Keeping your car safe from thieves isn’t particularly hard to do. It just takes a couple more minutes out your day.
It is worth it though, right?
