Signs you should fix a faulty exhaust

Whilst you car might sound sporty if there’s a blow from the exhaust this isn’t doing you, the vehicle, or the people you drive past any good. Faulty exhausts are noisy, they can expose you to obnoxious gases, and they can also attract the attention of the police, landing you in a spot of bother.

Fixing a faulty exhaust isn’t difficult, it’s something we’re rather good at here at Mercury Car Centre. Spotting the telltale signs of a damaged exhaust is easy and here are some of the most obvious points to look for.

Signs that your exhaust is faulty

Loud noise

In good condition your exhaust system should be fairly silent, unless you have a sport’s or performance update on your car. If a standard exhaust starts making unusual noises, or is louder than normal, this could indicate there’s a fault in one of the sections, possibly this has manifested into a hole. In particular, if the silencer section of the exhaust has developed a hole it’ll make a loud roar, your car will sound like it belongs on a race track.

Corrosion on separate sections

Rust and cracks along the seams of the pipes are signs of above average wear and tear. Drivers normally only become aware of this problem when they hear a hissing noise coming from the exhaust, small blows occur and further investigation might be required, revealing a crack in the manifold, splits in the pipes, or a leaking gasket. The easiest way to fix this is to take the car to an approved repair centre.

Rattling noises

If you hear rattling sounds coming from underneath the car this could indicate the exhaust has worked its way lose, possibly it’s broken free from a clamp and isn’t being held into place properly. This needs fixing as soon as possible to prevent further issues such as the system breaking free.

Poor performance

Drive a car with a faulty exhaust and you might notice the fuel efficiency of the vehicle is affected or the car doesn’t run as smoothly as possible.  To keep the car in perfect working order, have it serviced regularly and fix faulty exhausts as soon as you can!
